Working from her home studio workshop, Jan Cockell uses porcelain clay to make various shaped bowls, vases and boxes incorporating the universal patterns of nature carved, pierced and imprinted into the soft clay. The pieces are then dried, bisque-fired and then glazed with a matte white glaze.
The pieces are sprayed with oxide washes, although sometimes other glazes are used to produce different finishes. Crushed glass is then used to achieve subtle colour variations which come to life when fired in a kiln.
Jan is strongly influenced by the beauty of her bush surroundings, the beaches and the sea in the area she lives. Each handcrafted piece is unique and gorgeous to look at, which is probably why they make such popular gifts!
